Steptember 25

I'm taking on Steptember! Will you please show your support?

Hiya! I’m stepping up for a month-long mood boost and taking on a minimum of 15k steps a day. But I really need your help!

Please donate now to my Steptember fundraiser. I've set myself a goal of raising $1000 for this year.

Why Steptember? Most people who know me will know that my little Henry has Cerebral Palsy. While he is lucky in a sense that he only has mild symptoms compared to many others with CP it does mean he does find some things difficult and needs some additional help with things. We've been blessed with the improvements Henry has made during early intervention therapies like OT and physio so by raising money through steptember will help others needing diagnosis and treatment.

Note - no money raised during this fundraiser goes directly to Henry, it goes to the Cerebral Palsy Alliance.

Day 14

Sunday 14th Sep
This has been tough not doing any steps today and stuck in a hospital bed but I'm uplifted by all the love and support everyone is sending my way.

Steptember Day 13 - Houston we have a problem

Yesterday, I had the privilege to represent the QPS in the annual 9/11 Police vs Firefighters Masters Rugby League match. I had been looking forward to this game for months. The game began well, I was having fun playing alongside mates and I felt like I was playing well. Unfortunately in the second half I was tackled onto my left hip and dislocated it resulting in an Ambulance ride to Prince Charles hospital to have it relocated. Scans have sadly shown that the hip socket fractured during the dislocation meaning I'll be in hospital awhile and possible surgery. Waiting for a transfer to the Wesley Hospital.

Lisa likes to call me Johnny Farnham as I keep coming back to play but I sadly will have to throw the boots away after this.

Thankyou to my wife for her love and support (though if I wasn't surrounded by cops I wonder if she would have killed me for getting hurt again haha) and to everyone that helped me and Lisa out today including my sister who drove to get the kids so Lisa could stay with me. I've had a couple of people who have generously offered to take over my daily steps for Steptember, that is truly touching.

0/10 - I definitely do not recommend a hip dislocation
10/10 - the staff at the Prince Charles have been fantastic

Day 12

Day 12

Friday 12th Sep
The big winner of getting these daily steps in, is Lola our dog. She is loving all the extra walks she is getting. Today's walks were just a slow gentle pace conserving the body for tomorrow.

Day 11

Thursday 11th Sep

Day 11

Thursday 11th Sep
I didn't do much walking today at work so out for a night walk in what feels like the coldest night in weeks and here I was thinking winter was over.

Tonight's walk was much needed. A chance to get the body moving and walk quietly and undisturbed, forget about everything that happened in the world today and just be in the present. Today is also R U OK? Day. If you need someone to talk to, please reach out to me or someone else. If you aren't yet comfortable reaching out, put some shoes on your feet and go for a walk, to your mailbox, around the block, 1km or 10km, it doesn't matter, You'll thank yourself for it.

Day 10

Wednesday 10th Sep

Day 10

Wednesday 10th Sep
Today I ticked over 150,000 steps and hit the half way mark of my $1000 fundraising goal. So grateful for all the support so far. 10 days in, 20 days to go.

I hadn't walked too many steps during the day so this evening I went on a long walk to reach my steps for the day. Definitely peaceful walking at night.

Day 9

Tuesday 9th Sep

Day 9

Tuesday 9th Sep
Today's steps included doing groceries, walk with the family around the block and chasing Henry at the playground. Henry has traditionally been shy but it was great to see him today step out of his comfort zone and engage and play with another young boy at the playground.

Day 8

Tuesday 9th Sep

Day 8

Tuesday 9th Sep
Beautiful weather for walking today so knocked out a good chunk of my steps today with the dog exploring the new sections of the estate that are being cleared and under construction with new houses popping daily.

Day 7 Father's Day Walk

Monday 8th Sep

Day 7

Monday 8th Sep
Yesterday was a wonderful chilled father's day with the family. My steps were a slow start due to a sleep in, breakfast in bed, watching a movie and doing a puzzle with the kids. After lunch Lisa, Henry and I walked the dog and I continued stepping after dropping them home.

Henry learning to ride his balance bike

Saturday 6th Sep

Day 6

Saturday 6th Sep
Smashed out the steps today by spending time with Henry trying to teach him to use his balance bike (this has been a big challenge for him) and then walking him in his trike to a new playground. Then this afternoon I took Alana and her friends into Riverfire and enjoyed some fireworks. Great day!

Henry climbing a tree

Saturday 6th Sep

Day 5

Saturday 6th Sep
I was a little slow getting started in my steps for Day 5 as I wasn't feeling the greatest in the morning but fortunately that passed and I then went for a long run to knock out a big chunk of my 15000 steps and yay I was able to wear my runners again.

In the afternoon I went to Henry's daycare where they had a father's day afternoon tea and Henry was excited to show me all the things he likes to play with including climbing the fort and trying to climb a tree in the garden. When Henry was first diagnosed with CP I wasn't sure what it meant for him growing up, would he be able to do things like that at all but thankfully with all the early intervention therapies like physio and OT that he has done since and continues to do has him able to join in with other kids. This I am grateful for.

Day 4

Thursday 4th Sep
Another day, another 15000 steps completed. Big thankyou to everyone who has donated. I'm at $400 out of my $1000 fundraising goal for Steptember so I'm nearly half way.

Crime against fashion

Wednesday 3rd Sep

Day 3

Wednesday 3rd Sep
Today has been full of interruptions to my plans to dominate today's steps but managed a walk in the morning with Henry and the pooch and I'm currently out doing my night walk but will have to do a little extra tonight to hit my 15k steps. The good news is my small blisters from the hike I did before Steptember started, have nearly healed and I'll soon stop committing crimes against fashion and wearing sandals with socks.

Day 2

Tuesday 2nd Sep

Day 2

Tuesday 2nd Sep
Mowing and groceries, two jobs that sometimes I have to motivate myself to do but today they were a perfect opportunity to crack into my steps for the day! And an evening walk to finish the 15k steps which is such a nice way to end the day, I could be keeping up the night walks after this perhaps.

Day 1

Monday 1st Sep
Walking a hyperactive dog while pushing Henry on his trike was more difficult than expected 😂

Day 1

Monday 1st Sep
Probably shouldn't have done a huge hike the day before day 1 or should have done the hike today 😂. More importantly I should not have done the hike yesterday in shoes I haven't worn over long distances before. Have a couple of small blisters which isn't what you want on Day 1 but I'll adapt and overcome. Worked on my 15000 steps by a morning walk with Henry and our dog Lola, then an afternoon run and now finishing it off with a night time stroll. Thanks to the wonderful people who have donated last night and today and have me nearly at a quarter of my goal of $1000. Your love and support are appreciated
