Hello!
My name is Bree, and I need your help!
Next month I will be participating in a walking challenge called Steptember. This fundraiser directly supports the Cerebral Palsy Alliance - helping children and families in need of treatment and diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy.
For those who may not know, Cerebral Palsy is a physical disability that affects movement and posture, caused by an injury to the brain during pregnancy or shortly after birth. It is the most common physical disability with 34,000 people living with CP in Australia.
And for those who may not know me personally, I am 1 of those 34,000 people living with Cerebral Palsy.
I have Mild Cerebral Palsy in the form of Spastic Diplegia. In less technical terms, I am affected by CP mainly in my lower limbs - causing muscle stiffness/weakness, balance issues and involuntary movements. After being born at 26 weeks old and weighing less than 1kg, my CP was caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain during birth.
Cerebral Palsy is a disability that is highly stigmatised, and after years of trying to hide such a big part of my identity, I am so glad to be announcing my condition alongside this wonderful fundraiser.
Cerebral Palsy is a disability that has no cure, but with proper care, medication and surgery, individuals diagnosed with CP can live a healthy, fulfilling life full of movement and communication. Without the treatment and care I received, I highly doubt I would be as happy and healthy as I am today.
