Every Step I Take is for Children Like Mai Khoi ❤️

When my niece, Mai Khoi, was born, she was a happy, healthy little girl.
As a toddler, she was full of life. She loved dancing, singing, and making people smile. At childcare, she was often the star of the room. She was bright, energetic and coordinated, with a future full of possibilities ahead of her.
Then, without warning, everything changed.
Mai Khoi contracted a virus that almost took her life.
She spent weeks in hospital while our family waited, hoped and prayed. The doctors eventually delivered devastating news: the infection had caused severe damage to her brain. Against the odds, she survived, but the little girl who came home could no longer walk, talk, or do the things that had once come so naturally.
Overnight, she lost skills that most of us take for granted.
She had to learn everything again.
Every movement. Every sound. Every step.
The journey that followed was long, difficult and at times heart-breaking. Her parents devoted everything they had to her recovery while our extended family did what we could to help. There were moments when it felt hopeless. Living overseas meant access to specialised therapies, equipment and support services was limited or non-existent, making an already difficult journey even harder.
But Mai Khoi never gave up.

The photo on the right is Mai Khoi today.
Through years of therapy, determination, love and support, she has achieved what once seemed impossible. Today she keeps up with school alongside her peers, can communicate confidently in her own words, and can walk short distances independently. These milestones may seem ordinary to some, but for Mai Khoi and her family, they represent victories won through extraordinary courage.
Her story reminds me that behind every child facing neurological challenges is a family fighting alongside them every single day.
Children like Mai Khoi have a much greater chance of reaching their potential when they have access to the right support, therapy, equipment and opportunities. Here in Australia, organisations supported through Steptember help provide that support and give families hope during some of their hardest moments.
That is why I am participating in Steptember.
Every step I take is for Mai Khoi, and for the thousands of children and families facing similar challenges. Your donation can help provide life-changing support, services and opportunities that make a real difference.
If Mai Khoi's story has touched you, I would be incredibly grateful for your support.
