Steptember 26

Why I'm Stepping Up for Steptember

I'm taking on Steptember this year to support a cause that's very important to me and my family - raising money for Cerebral Palsy Alliance (CPA) - and sharing a little of my son Arlo's story.

Last year, my wife and I welcomed our twin boys into the world, joining their older brother and making ours a true 'boys house'. Unfortunately for our twins, they came into the world about 15 weeks early, born at just under a kilogram each and spending their first 102 days of life in various hospitals around Sydney.

On just his second day of life, our world was rocked again when we learnt that Arlo had suffered a life-threatening brain bleed, leaving things very uncertain for his future.

While we had known since those early days that Arlo would likely have cerebral palsy, we didn't know what that meant in terms of outcomes. Within days of coming home from the hospital, Arlo started working with the team at CPA, receiving the therapy and support he'll need to thrive.

Throughout this Steptember, I'll share a little more of Arlo's story - from those first uncertain days through to where he is today, and the difference CPA has made along the way.  Please join me in supporting CPA's amazing work by donating to my Steptember fundraiser!

The Uncertainty of a Cerebral Palsy Diagnosis

Tuesday 22nd Sep
I'll never forget the feeling of hearing "oh, [Arlo] will walk". It was many months after Arlo came home from hospital and started his 'early intervention' therapies with Cerebral Palsy Alliance. We'd endured a few setbacks, and he had just finished one of many assessments designed to track his development.

One of the most challenging aspects of a cerebral palsy diagnosis (or being at 'high risk' of it) is that you just don't know what your child's outcomes will be. As with many conditions, the severity of cerebral palsy and how it impacts your child can vary dramatically.

For Tina and I, having a positive mindset has been key. We focus on "what can we do now to help Arlo tomorrow?". We were really happy that at 9-months corrected age, Arlo was able to sit unassisted, but it was another thing entirely to hear that this is a strong predictor he'll be able to walk someday.

Thanks to his early intervention therapy (physio, occupational, and speech) with CPA, Arlo continues to make strides in his development. I'll follow up soon with what he does in therapy and where he's at now!
